We have been waiting for what seems like eons for this event, Spring passing into Summer, Summer to Autumn, and as time passed, we watched as the large sign on I-5 emerged, salivating over the large carports that announced the long-anticipated arrival of Mount Vernon's very own BURGERMASTER. Yes. I am yelling. That is how I roll when I am excited. It is a blessing and a curse.
Though we thought it would never come to pass, the day finally came when my partner in culinary critique and I rolled up to a large, brightly lit menu sign, turned our lights on, and waited, for service. Looking around, Kurt immediately predicted that this place would get a good score on the burger scale.
Soon enough, a cheerful young woman came to the truck window, pulled out her personal little computer-type thingy and took our order. I got the Combo Meal One, Kurt ordered the Number Two. The difference was that mine came with a milk shake. So you can see which of us fully understands what must happen along with a burger.
Though it took about twenty minutes to get our order, (they were very busy), it was well worth the wait. When Kurt handed my burger to me, I immediately noticed the heft. I excitedly opened the silver wrapper that enveloped my tasty treat to find a beautiful sight indeed: a perfectly toasted bun holding a well-formed patty, cheese, a large slice of sweet onion, lettuce, pickles and some type of sauce. To say that the bun was actually a cradle for this precious cargo would not be an overstatement.

The patty was seasoned well, though not very juicy, and the rest of what made up the burger, Kurt and I agreed, was pretty much perfect. We both noticed that the place was cheerful, clean and full of people moving pretty quickly. We also noticed that all the cooks were wearing white jackets with red bandanas tied around the neck.
The menu was entirely red, white and black except for two items: one green circle which indicated that the beef was local, hormone-free, grass fed beef, and the other one was communicating the upcharges for certain items that you might want to put in your shake like butterfinger crumbs or malt. Conceptually divergent, but really, at a burger joint like this, I am willing to forgive this oversight.

In the end, the overall burger score suffered because it was quite thin and not juicy at all. If the burger had been thicker and not cooked to the level of rubbery chewiness it was, this burger would have fared much better. The fries were pretty good while hot, but as they cooled they became quite rubbery. Kurt's fries had less salt on them than mine did, which seemed strange as they came out on the same tray. The chocolate shake was the right consistency and very good flavor, but it was no Big Scoop.
The rest of the menu looked like it could be good, and we both left feeling like we would go back to try other things, maybe even a double burger to see if that fared any better. The drive-up thing was novel. I am not sure when that novelty might wear off, but for now, it was all part of the charm that is BURGERMASTER. We will keep going there until we decide we can no longer bring ourselves to sit in the car and eat. Which would be longer for me than for Kurt. He drives every day. It must get boring after a while.
